CANBERRA (IQNA) – A Mawlid event celebrating the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was held in Sydney this weekend.

Sydney Celebrates 14th Multicultural Mawlid Concert

More than 5,000 people from diverse Australian communities came together to celebrate the Mawlid in a highly successful event held on Sunday, September 24.

The celebration, held under the patronage of Darulfatwa Australia, started with a recitation of the noble Qur’an, as a convoy of over 90 imams and sheiks from diverse ethnic backgrounds took to the stage in a demonstration of honor and glory led by the Chairman of Darulfatwa, the Sheikh Salim Alwan, Australian Muslim Times reported.

“Today we gather to celebrate a momentous occasion, the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) celebrated by Muslims all over the world,” Sheikh Alwan said.

“Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us the values of tolerance, kindness, and mercy, and it’s no wonder, as he was sent as a mercy to the world.”

“Muslims in Australia have made significant contributions to the development of this country adhering to an approach of moderation and fairness, rejecting radicalism and abhorrent extremism in both action and preaching.”

Multicultural Celebration

The event was held in cooperation with Al-Azhar in Egypt, Jakim in Malaysia, the Indonesian Scholars Council, Al Kairouan in Morocco, and Al-Zaytouna University in Tunisia.

It included spectacular stage performances from twelve different countries, including a play narrating the birth of the Prophet, followed by the Australian Islamic Chanting group.

The event came a few days before the Mawlid.

Many Muslims see the Prophet’s birthday as a time to learn about and reflect on the life of the last messenger of God.

Around the world, celebrations of the Prophet’s birthday include stalls selling Islamic books, leaflets, clothing, prayer mats, and other gifts.
