IQNA – The head of the International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS) said Muslim countries should throw their weight behind South Africa in its legal case against the Israeli regime.

IUMS Chief Sheikh Ali Qaradaghi

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Sheikh Ali al-Qaradaghi said the support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza has proven that the West is committed to no principles and values.

Noting that Israel has committed hundreds of crimes against Palestinians, including the massacre of women and children, destruction of hospitals and mosques, and preventing aid delivery to the Gaza Strip, he said history has not witnessed such a tragedy as the world is witnessing in Gaza today.

He called on Muslim states and other countries and humanitarian organizations to support South Africa in the case against Israel.

In late 2023, South Africa filed a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the Israeli apartheid regime’s genocidal war on Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

In its interim ruling on January 26, the UN court ruled that South Africa's claims are plausible. It ordered provisional measures, saying that the Israeli regime must implement steps to prevent genocidal acts and allow humanitarian aid flow into Gaza.

Al-Qaradaghi further called on Muslims to do what they can during the holy month of Ramadan and sympathize with and help the people of Gaza, who are suffering from hunger, thirst and illness.

He said one who wants to perform Umrah, which is Mustahab (an action that is recommended but not obligatory), should instead give the money to help the people of Gaza.

The IUMS chief also called for massive presence of Muslims in the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Monday marked the beginning of Ramadan, during which Muslims abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset, in Gaza, where the entire 2.2 million population are unable to meet their food needs.

Israel launched its deadly war on Gaza on October 7, 2023. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 31,045 people have been killed and 72,654 wounded in Israeli attacks. About 72 percent of the victims are children and women.

More than five months of brutal Israeli attacks have also caused extreme hunger among the Gazans.

At least 25 people, most of them children, have died from malnutrition and dehydration in the Palestinian territory in recent days.

Israel has blocked the entry of food and aid supplies into Gaza draining its limited health services.
