TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Pakistani scholar underscored the role that the media can play in promoting or undermining unity among Muslims.

Pakistani scholar Seyedah Sahar Zaidi

Dr. Seyedah Sahar Zaidi, a professor at Faculty of Islamic Studies of Islamabad, in an address to the ninth webinar of the 37th Islamic Unity Conference expressed her views on importance of unity among Muslims and the role of media.

She said the main objective of media is to disseminate the news and also to inform people on the latest issues across the globe though it could also be at the service of disinformation.

The Pakistani thinker noted that the present situation in the Islamic countries clearly points to the need for solidarity more than any other time.

She referred to the Syria war as an instance of the media being used to serve the interests of the enemies when Takfiri terrorists published fake news in order to deviate attention from the realities of the war.

Zaidi said Syria was first plagued by civil war and then the enemy media tried to expand the conflict to a war between Shias and Sunnis by blaming each group for attacks on the other.

She stressed importance of the media to publish the truth rather than fake news as a way to prevent hostile plots to divide Islamic unity.

She called for high quality material on the media run by Muslim states in order to attract audiences from across the globe.

The Pakistani media expert also called for workshops for the Muslim journalists in line with promoting Islamic unity and also more conferences that convene thinkers to exchange views on boosting solidarity in the world of Islam.

The 37th Islamic Unity Conference is underway in the capital Tehran with a number of Shia and Sunni scholars attending the webinars of the conference.

This year the elites and religious figures attending the event discuss the theme “Islamic Cooperation to Achieve Common Values”.

The international conference began on September 28 and will run to October 3 concurrent with the Islamic Unity Week which marks the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
