TEHRAN (IQNA) – The first edition of an international conference on Qira’at (methods of Quran recitation) was held in Tripoli, Libya.

The closing ceremony of the event was held with the participation of officials including the head of the Tripoli-based government Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh as well as Mohammed al-Abani, head of the endowment and Islamic affairs department.

Also in the ceremony, winners of the African country’s Quran memorization license exam in 2022 were announced.

Libyan officials presented awards to the winners.

Ten Qiraats are the ten famous methods of the Quran recitations by famous authority chain holders. Each Qira’at derives its name from the famous Rawi, the one who narrates it with an established and authenticated chain. Each Qira’at is recited by the master with all variants. It’s a kind of corpus of recitation, that is then referred to the master by the students.

Some scholars believe the Qira’ats to be seven and some ten.

Libya is a Muslim-majority country in North Africa that has more than a million Quran memorizers.

The country has been in turmoil since a NATO-backed civil war in 2011 overthrew and killed veteran dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Libya has in recent years been split between the government of national unity in Tripoli and an eastern-based administration.
