Muharram Mourning Rituals Begin at Islamic Centers in Europe

The ceremonies will be hosted by the center every night until Monday, August 8.

The programs of the first ten days of Muharram begin at 7:30 every evening with the participation of devotees of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).

They include Quran recitation, religious speeches, recitation of supplications, Maghrib and Isha prayers and mourning rituals.

The speeches are delivered by Hojat-ol-Islam Hamid Maleki and Javad Barzegar recites elegies.

The programs are broadcast live on the center’s YouTube channel.

The Islamic centers of Berlin, Germany, and Zurich, Switzerland, also play host to similar programs on the first ten days of Muharram.

In Berlin, there are separate ceremonies in the Persian, Urdu and German languages.

Muharram, which began today, July 30, is the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in the month of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Muawiya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.
