TEHRAN (IQNA) – Registration has begun for Quran reciters and Tawasheeh (religious singing) groups willing to join Iran’s Quranic convoy, known as Noor (light), during the Arbaeen pilgrimage, an official said.

Seyed Mohammad Mojani, an official with the Arbaeen Headquarters, told IQNA that registration began on Wednesday, which marks the brith anniversary of Imam Kadhim (AS), and will continue for over a week.

He added that applicants should be among top qaris at the national or provincial level and provide a recommendation from a Quran expert.

The Supreme Quran Council will select members of the convoy, he stated.

Women qaris can also apply to be sent to the pilgrimage in coordination with the Headquarters’ women committee, he noted.

Dispatching the Noor Convoy to Atabat (Iraq’s holy sites) will start in August, according to Mojani.

The Arbaeen mourning ceremony is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

It marks the 40th day after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Imam Hussein (AS). This year’s Arbaeen falls on September 17.

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias, including many Iranians, flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

The pilgrims, mainly from Iraq and Iran, travel long routes on foot to the holy city.

Every year, Iran’s Noor Convoy is dispatched to Iraq for Quranic programs during Arbaeen.

The members of the convoy organize different Quranic and religious programs, including recitation of the Quran, Adhan (call to prayers), and performing Tawasheeh.
