TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi slammed US secretary of state’s anti-Iran remarks in Riyadh, saying the US and Saudi Arabia have formed a partnership directed at spreading instability, war, and extremism.

In a statement on Monday, Qassemi said the Riyadh-Washington partnership has been aimed at spreading instability and war and intensifying arms race and extremism.

He said it has led to conflicts and mistrust among regional countries and insecurity and crises in the region.

Qassemi referred to the dire situation in Yemen as one of the results of such a partnership.

He also described the US state secretary’s remarks against Iran as repetitious, empty and unfounded claims.

He added that Iran’s advisory presence in two neighboring countries, Iraq and Syria, has been at the request of the two countries’ legitimate governments and will continue as long as they need Iran’s help.

US State Secretary Mike Pompeo, during a joint press conference with his Saudi counterpart in Riyadh on Sunday, called Iran “the greatest sponsor of terrorism in the world,” in a further signal the US intends to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal.

“We are determined to make sure it never possesses a nuclear weapon,” Pompeo said of Iran during his first visit to the Middle East since being sworn in as secretary of state last week.

“The Iran deal in its current form does not provide that assurance,” Pompeo continued at the briefing alongside Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.

“We will continue to work with our European allies to fix that deal. But if a deal cannot be reached, the (US) president has said that he will leave that deal.”
