Prominent Egyptian Qari Abdul Fattah Ali Taruti says his Ta’abiri style of Quran recitation helps the listener get the meaning of the verses.

Speaking to IQNA, Taruti said in this style, the Qari chooses a Lahn (tone) that matches the general framework of what the verse says.
“I was a student of Al-Azhar University in the field of promotion of Islamic thought and a prayers leader and preacher with Egypt’s Awqaf Ministry. My familiarity with Islamic sciences gave me the ability to introduce a new method in Quran recitation called the Ta’abiri style.
“This style got widespread fast and many Quran reciters and activists approved of it.”
Taruti said due to his familiarity with such fields as semantics, Hadith sciences, Quran interpretation, etc, he makes utmost efforts to convey the meaning of the verses to the listener when reciting the Quran.
“Through this method, even those who are not familiar with the Arabic language can feel the grandeur of the verses and their atmosphere.”
He said that is the reason why some non-Muslims in the US, Spain and South Africa embraced Islam after listening to his Quran recitation with Ta’abiri style.
“In 1997, I was in San Francisco, the US, and recited the Quran. Afterwards, I was informed that 10 individuals attending that session had converted to Islam.”
Taruti noted that the same thing happened in 2000 in Spain and then in 2003 in South Africa where a Christian man was inspired to embrace Islam.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the eminent Egyptian Qari recalled his visits to Iran and his recitations in the presence of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution.
“A few years ago I was invited to Iran to serve as a jury member in the International Awqaf Quran Competition. After the contest was over, I was invited to recite the Quran in the presence of the Supreme Leader. I selected some verses to recite whose contents were in line with the conditions of the Muslim world at the time.”
He said that after the recitation, Iran’s Supreme Leader gave an extensive speech explaining the meaning and interpretation of those verses.
“Grand Ayatollah Khamenei then called on Iranian Qaris to be meticulous in selecting verses for recitation and reciting them beautifully.”
Further in the interview, Taruti, asked about the status of Quranic activities in Egypt since the January 25, 2011 Revolution, said governments do not have a major role in Quranic activities and thus with the change of governments they do not change a lot.
He underlined that the Egyptian Qaris have remained active like before the revolution.
Born in 1965 in the village of Tarut, Al-Sharqiya province of Egypt, Taruti learned the entire Quran by heart at the age of 8.
He then went to Sheikh Mustafa Ahmed Abdullah to learn Quran recitation and Tajweed.
Taruti has been inspired by the recitation styles of other masters like Sheikh Muhammad Shahat Anwar and Muhammad Abdel Azizi Hassan. He has been a major Quran reciter and has introduced a new recitation style.
