The OIC in a statement expressed hope that the ceasefire will help to reduce the suffering of the Yemeni people and prepare the ground for easing tensions and achieving a comprehensive political solution for the crisis that will lead to peace, security and stability in Yemen.
The two-month-long truce entered into effect at 7 PM local time on Saturday, according to UN special envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg.
He said all military operations in the air, on the ground and in the sea have stopped, adding that the truce could be renewed with the consent of the concerned parties.
The Saudi-led military campaign, which has enjoyed unstinting arms, logistical, and political support on the part of the United States, has been seeking to reinstate Yemen’s former Riyadh- and Washington-friendly officials.
The offensive has stopped short of its goals while killing hundreds of thousands of Yemenis in the process and turning the entire Yemen into the scene of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
