The formation of extremist Takfiri groups and the escalation of their activities originate from a clash between religious and secular worlds, an Iranian scholar said.

Speaking to IQNA, Emad Afrouq added that there are traces of the the "Clash of Civilization" Theory in extremist activities of Takfiri groups.
He said Samuel Huntington slyly distorts the truth and sets the ground for creation of differences among religions and denominations within religions.
Samuel Phillips Huntington (1927 –2008) was a conservative political scientist whose 1993 work "The Clash of Civilizations?" provoked great debate among international relations theorists.
According to Dr Afrouq, in the inter-religious domain, different faiths did not fall into the trap of the "Clash of Civilizations" as they vigorously pursued inert-religious dialogue and peace.
"But unfortunately, this was not the case in the intra-religious realm. That is, we did not witness the same thing (inter-religious dialogue) happen among Islamic schools of thought while everything was ready for taking firm strides in the field of intra-religious issues."
Referring to the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, common religious grounds and numerous issues that necessitate Islamic unity as some of the factors that paved the way for dialogue among Islamic schools of thought, Afrouq regretted that the opportunity was not seized to promote Islamic unity.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian university professor and political and social analyst cited the Ash'ari extremist ideology as one of the factors that led to the formation of extremist groups like the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
The ISIL, a terrorist group has links with Saudi intelligence and is believed to be indirectly supported by the Israeli regime, have been wreaking havoc on Syria and Iraq in the past few months.
Afrouq noted that Ash'ari ideology is one that adheres to determinism and attaches no importance to human beings' free will.
Takfiri groups like ISIL are extremists who consider non-Muslims and Muslims other than themselves as infidels and Madhur al dam (those whose blood must be shed).
In the past years, they have committed atrocities in various countries such as Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Pakistan.
