TEHRAN (IQNA) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei approved a proposal to pardon or commute the sentences of 1,542 Iranian convicts sentenced by various courts in the country.

The pardon was granted at the request of the country’s Judiciary Chief Hojat-ol-Islam Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr.

A special judiciary committee had earlier deemed the inmates to have the necessary conditions for being pardoned.

Article 110 of the Constitution grants the Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

The clemency, however, does not apply to certain types of convicts, including those who have been sentenced for their role in the armed struggle against the country, armed or organized drug trafficking, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery, and embezzlement.

The auspicious occasion of Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

In Iran, Eid al-Fitr is expected to fall on Monday if the crescent moon of the month of Shawwal is sighted on Sunday evening. Otherwise Eid will be celebrated on Tuesday.
