TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iraqi intelligence apparatuses have thwarted a large-scale terrorist operation that aimed to target the capital Baghdad and several provinces, an official said.

Ali al-Basri, a senior official with the Iraqi intelligence service, said it would be the largest terrorist operation in 2019.

Speaking to al-Sabah newspaper, he said Baghdad, Erbil, Basra and a number of other cities in different parts of Iraq were the targets of the terrorists.

Foiling the operation, the intelligence and security forces of the country managed to arrest 160 terrorists in the Nineveh province in the north, 40 in Baghdad and 4 in the southern city of Basra, he noted.

Former Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi declared the end of military operations against the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group in the country on December 9, 2017.

On July 10 that year, he had formally declared victory over Daesh in Mosul, which served as the terrorists’ main urban stronghold in Iraq.

Since then, remnants of the terrorist outfit have claimed responsibility for sporadic attacks in different parts of the Arab country.
