Iraqi Parliament to Elect President
TEHRAN (IQNA) – The parliament of Iraq is scheduled to choose the country’s new president this afternoon.
The parliament issued a statement Sunday afternoon, saying the lawmakers will hold a session on Monday to elect one of the seven Kurdish candidates for presidency.
It is for the first time in the past 15 years that Kurdish parties fail to agree on one candidate.
Once elected by lawmakers, the new president will task the majority bloc in parliament with drawing up a new government.
