TEHRAN (IQNA) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei attended a mourning ceremony Sunday night on the 6th day of the lunar Hijri month of Muharram.

It was the first night of mourning at the Imam Khomeini (RA) Husseiniyeh in Tehran for martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

A large number of people and the Islamic Establishment’s officials were also present at the event.

It began with elegy recitation by Seyed Majid Banifatemeh and Mansour Arzi.

The ceremony also included a speech by senior cleric Hojat-ol-Islam Kazem Sediqi, in which he elaborated on different aspects of the Imam Hussein (AS) uprising and the lessons of the Ashura school.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in the month of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Moaweya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.
