TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani described the conditions of the persecuted Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar as shocking.

Speaking in a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven in New York, Rouhani noted that the Muslim minority is facing tough conditions and that some 400,000 Rohingya have been displaced as a result of the violence against them.

He underlined the necessity to put pressure on the Myanmar government to put an end to the genocide and violence against Muslims, the website of the president’s office reported.

The president also highlighted the role of the European Union in stopping the inhumane treatment of Muslims in Myanmar and helping the Rohingya refugees.

The Swedish premier also deplored the situation of Myanmar Muslims as tragic and said Stockholm will do everything in its power to stop the tragedy.

The Rohingya, described as "the world’s most persecuted minority,” have been denied citizenship in Myanmar, which has effectively rendered them stateless.

Myanmar’s government has laid a siege to the western state of Rakhine, where the Rohingya Muslims are concentrated.

There, horrific violence, including killing, rape and torching property, has been taking place against the minority Muslims, according to reports and eyewitnesses.

Soldiers and extremist Buddhists have reportedly been killing or raping the Muslims and setting their homes on fire.

Myanmar's government says 400 people, mostly Muslims, have died in the latest bout of violence. The UN says the actual number likely tops 1,000.

So far, the global community has failed to take action against the "ethnic cleansing” of the Rohingya and to immediately demand an end to the atrocities.
