TEHRAN (IQNA) – As Iran’s 33rd International Quran Competition entered its second day, the first edition of an international Quran contest for the visually-impaired also got underway here in the Iranian capital.

Both competitions are being held at the Imam Khomeini (RA) Mosalla (prayer hall) with the participation of Quran reciters and memorizers from different Muslim and non-Muslim countries.

Mohammad Nasser Amiri from Afghanistan was the first memorizer to demonstrate his skills at the event for the visually-impaired.

In the 33rd international contest, representatives of Tajikistan, Tanzania, Syria, Ethiopia, Niger, Sweden, Mauritania, Ivory Coast, Thailand, Iraq, and Malaysia went on the stage on Friday.

Iran’s international Quran contest kicked off on Wednesday and will run until Tuesday, May 17.

There are some 130 Quran reciters and memorizers from over 70 countries competing in the two categories of the Quranic event.

On the sidelines of the contest on Friday, a ceremony was held at the Mosalla to honor senior Iranian Quran memorizer and reciter Shahrian Parhizgar.

A number of Quranic and religious officials as well as representatives of the competition’s panel of judges were present at the ceremony.
